Vascular malformations are categorized according to their blood flow velocity through the lesion. Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) belong to the group of “fast-flow” lesions, i.e. those vascular malformations that have a very fast blood flow. Arteriovenous malformations are further subdivided according to their specific vascular structure and morphology. Arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) are a special subtype with direct arteriovenous connections. Thus a distinction is made below between direct arteriovenous fistulas and other forms of arteriovenous malformations.
